Core Team

     DAVID DEBLINGER       CEO and Co-Founder

For over thirty years David has facilitated workshops, developing a unique and inspirational ensemble (team) building process.  He was introduced to the concept of 'ensemble' as a junior at New York's High School of Performing Arts.  He attributes much to his work there with Anthony Abeson, a teacher whose work with Jerzy Grotowski, Peter Brook, Harold Clurman, and Lee Strasberg informed much of David's introduction to the great power in Ensemble Building activities.

David went on to Wesleyan University, where he created a major called Education through Theater.  After graduating he began working as an actor in theater, television and film, and also started to facilitate ensemble building group workshops for an array of arts education organizations (Globalkids, Foreign Policy Association, Hospital Audiences, Soundance, British American Youth Theater Festival, The Floating Hospital, Community Works, NYC Department of Cultural Affairs, Dixon Place and more).

These workshops engaged an array of groups old and young.  A highlight was guiding an ensemble of at-risk youth as they created a performance developed from their personal experiences.  This performance was presented at the United Nations for its “Rights of the Child Conference” in 1990.

In 1992, David co-founded what is now the internationally renowned Labyrinth Theater Company.  David co-wrote Labyrinth’s original mission and established an aesthetic emphasizing his ensemble concept.  He conceived two successful programs for Labyrinth based on this concept: The Ensemble Workshop and the Intensive Ensemble.

Through the years David has engaged groups of all different ages and backgrounds. His own skills as an actor and performance artist are essential in eliciting laughter and pathos, and in setting a tone and defining stakes for others to do the same.

David is also an award winning actor, writer and filmmaker.  On television he has appeared on The Sopranos, Sex in the City, Law and Order, SVU, and Damages, among others.  He has enjoyed a long career acting on stage in New York and around the country, collaborating with luminaries like Philip Seymour Hoffman, Ellen Burstyn, John Patrick Shanley, Sam Rockwell and many others.

David is the winner of the New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship award as a video artist and directed the award winning short film, “The Callback,” starring Sam Rockwell.  He has also acted in films produced by Martin Scorsese and Dustin Hoffman.  He recently finished filming a principal role in  “The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby” starring James McAvoy, Jessica Chastain, William Hurt and Viola Davis.

TOMOKO MIYAGI       Co-Founder and Creative Director

Tomoko determines the visual aesthetic of the company for marketing, special events and creative projects. She is also a co-founder of hiroyukifilms, which has produced her two short films, one of which, “missing you ko” was screened at the HBO screening room.

As a Performance Artist and writer, she has created and performed numerous performance art pieces and plays at Labyrinth Theater Company, where she has been a member since 1999.  “Memoire” and "Mimi's Cafe" were chosen to be part of LAB's Barn series readings at The Public Theater in New York.

She was born and raised in Okinawa, Japan and now lives with her husband, David Deblinger, in Brooklyn, New York.

Client Testimonial

Rainer Judd (President of Judd Foundation)

"From the first moment I met David Deblinger I was moved and inspired by his passion and commitment to the power of theatre to transform, heal, and reveal. His experience with actors and non-actors has given him the ability to invite, dare, and prompt each person he works with to embrace their own stories and feelings as their gift to share and magnify as theatre, as art."
